The Word for Wives

Tom McCrossan

READ : Ephesians 5:21-24

“Love, honor and

obey

“ were part of the marriage vows but no longer. Doesn’t verse 22 call for it? No.

For Paul,

submit

means to voluntarily yield one’s rights to another. The nature of the relation ship determines all. If marriage was like joining the military, submission would imply obedience. But Christian marriage is not a tour of duty in the armed forces! The word obey doesn’t appear in Scripture with respect to wives, though it does apply to chil dren. Any husband who tries to control his wife like a child is not only a fool; he is being completely unbiblical.

Verse 22 shows that a wife’s submission to her husband is “as to the Lord.” So Paul is saying: “Wives, because of your faith and love for the Lord, be ready to give up some rights so your relationship with your husband won’t go wrong.”

Wives are not being told to let husbands “walk all over them.” Rather, walk in his shoes and examine his viewpoint and needs. Don’t refuse to do for him what you’d love to have him do for you unless he does it first. Trust the Lord when he says, “Forgive and you will be forgiven; give and it will be given to you” (Lk. 6:37-38).

PRAYER

God, grant me faith to believe your promises and to submit myself to others in love. Amen.
