The Weapons of Faith

Tom McCrossan

READ : Ephesians 6:17-18

The armory of God contains two powerful weapons: the sword of the Spirit and prayer in the Spirit. The sword of the Spirit is the Word of God; it is our primary offensive and defensive weapon. With it we can ward off the attacks of Satan, use it to storm enemy strongholds and free the enemy’s prisoners.

As always, Jesus best demonstrated its use. When tempted by Satan he replied with Scripture (see Luke 4). He had it memorized and so immediately available. He knew both the words of Scripture and their meaning. In John 5:39-40 and Matthew chapters 5 and 23, we learn how Jesus condemned the Pharisees for not understanding the Scriptures they said they lived by. They tithed their herbs and rested on the Sabbath, but neglected justice. On the Sabbath they plotted to kill Jesus. They had lost the heart of God that lay behind the Word of God.

God most clearly reveals his will in Scripture. It is able to make us wise for salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. Through the God-breathed Scriptures we may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. And when we need them, the Holy Spirit will bring Jesus’ words to mind – but only if we know them to begin with!

Give me a delight for your word, and daily reveal your heart and mind to me through it, for Jesus’ sake. Amen.
