Who Will Win the Next Round?

Fighting a battle against Satan sounds even scarier than stepping into a boxing ring with an undefeated heavyweight champion. Who am I against a supernatural being with centuries of experience in the fine arts of temptation and intimidation? Besides, the doctrine of human sinfulness tells me I am already prone to sin as it – I practically help him defeat myself! It is virtually a losing battle. No wonder so many give up without even trying.

Today’s reading however, among others (e.g. James 4:7; Romans 8:37-39; Ephesians 6:11), suggests the opposite. We are

helpless pawns of the devil, always destined to lead our lives in constant spiritual failure. The world champion has been defeated on the cross. By depending on God’s power we too can defeat him in our daily lives.

Now imagine that the heavyweight boxer is you. Imagine the sad irony if you lost the next round to an old has-been boxer (and a crooked one at that) because you lost your confidence, ignored your Trainer and quit working out.

Don’t be a loser! Get out there and fight!

Mighty God, today make me a conqueror, trusting not in my strength but in your power and faithfulness.. Amen.
