Cultural Captivity

READ : Daniel 1:1-7

Daniel was just a teenager when Nebuchadnezzar carried him off to Babylon. There, he and his friends were subjected to a formal brainwashing scheme—a plan to eradicate the Hebrew culture by turning Judah’s best and brightest into Babylonians.

For three years, Daniel and his friends were to absorb the Babylonian language, literature and food while serving in the king’s palace. They were even given new names after Babylonian gods, all in an effort to assimilate them into their new pagan culture.

Not much has changed in 2,600 years. The battle for the hearts and minds of our young people exists yet today as the secular culture—the media, movies, music, materialism, moral relativism—attempts to steal away our kids.

As we’ll see, Daniel remained true to his Hebrew upbringing by being obedient to God and trusting in him. Although relatively young, Daniel had an incredibly mature relationship with God and a keen understanding of the Lord’s presence in his life.

The world wants to take our children to Babylon. May we help lead them to the Lord early so that they, like Daniel, can withstand the pressures of the culture.

Lord, be with our young people as they face a world increasingly hostile to Christianity. Amen.
