The God of Jacob Is Our Fortress

READ : Psalm 46:1-11

“God is our mighty fortress,
always ready to help in times of trouble.
And so, we won’t be afraid!
‘Be still, and know that I am God.
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.’
The Lord Almighty is with us.
The God of Jacob is our fortress.”
from Psalm 46:1-2, 10-11 (cev)

This Psalm is so familiar. I remember singing these words with a choir. While I was studying Jacob’s life, that powerful declaration “the God of Jacob is our fortress” struck me with special force.

The God whose eye was on Jacob even before his birth, who watched as Jacob trapped himself in his own schemes, who reached out to him when he was most vulnerable, this is the God of Jacob and ours also.

Jacob still had miles to go and years to learn. His Uncle Laban was an even craftier schemer than Jacob was. When the time came to face his angry brother, Rebekah was no longer there to help. But the God of Jacob did just as he had promised: “I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go” (Gen. 28:15).

God of Jacob, you are faithful forever. You have promised to be with us. May we honor your name. Amen.
