Put to the Test

Michael Wilcock

READ : 1 Chronicles 14:8-17

News of a Philistine invasion tests David’s readiness to take everything to God in prayer, and it does so in more ways than one.

This is an attack not just on him but on his people. Will he remember the tragedy of Perez-Uzza, when his failure to seek the Lord hurt others far more than him?

It was an earlier Philistine challenge that had shown how out of touch with God Saul was. Will this one show David to be any different?

And when it happens a second time, will David prove to be making a habit of referring things to the Lord?

We may be curious to know how exactly the divine responses to his prayers are conveyed to him. But there is a much more important question: when he does know what God is saying, will he do what he is told?

In every case the answer is Yes. David is not sinless, but he is learning the regular, obedient, “practice of the presence of God.”

Lord, remind us repeatedly to seek you in everything. Amen.
