It's a Bird . . . It's a Plane . . .

Philippians 4:1

The title of today’s reading comes from the beginning of a 1940s radio show about a flying Superman that kids idolized. I grew up in the 1960’s with a different flying superhero named Mr. Terrific. His ability to fly depended on a pill. Once the pill’s effects ran out, down came Mr. Terrific in a heap on the ground.

I sometimes think that my journey as a Christ follower is much like Mr. Terrific. One day I feel like I’m flying in the sky and am fully transformed in mind, body and spirit. I think to myself, “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength” (Phil.4:13, niv). But then for some reason my pill runs out and I fall to the ground, less than transformed. What happened?

Unfortunately, our lowly bodies will not experience full transformation until Christ returns. Our bodies and minds are subject to weakness, decay and death due to sin. However, by taking the pill of God’s Word on a daily basis, absorbing it for spiritual energy and action we slowly become more transformed into the likeness of Christ.

Lord, help us to remember we are citizens of heaven already in the process of being transformed into your likeness. Amen.
