A New Start

READ : Romans 6:1-14

September traditionally is the month when things begin again after a long relaxing summer. New program years start in churches. Yellow buses stop at corners to pick up kids for another year of learning. Anxiety levels run high for five-year-olds on their first day of kindergarten. Freshmen begin their high school and college careers.

New starts are not just for churches and schools. All of us can start over. Jesus Christ is continually renewing us. Through his death and resurrection, we can enjoy the benefits of living brand new lives in him. The people we used to be are completely gone; they were nailed to the cross and forgiven by his death. The Apostle Paul sums it up this way, “Anyone who belongs to Christ is a new person. The past is forgotten, and everything is new” (2 Cor. 5:17, cev). Wow, our lives no longer resemble sin-filled messes. They are just as clean and pure as our risen Savior’s.

Are you living Christ’s new life? If not, I pray that you will make a fresh start with him. Let the signs and sounds of school children and yellow buses be a reminder that Jesus always offers one new beginning after another.

Thank you, Lord, for giving me numerous chances to start over. Amen.
