READ : Genesis 39:2-23
Many times I feel trapped, trapped in a body that doesn’t work right. In my mind’s eye I visualize myself jogging through a grassy field or driving a bright red sports car. Then I look down at my spastic body and feel its limitations all the more.
When Joseph was thrown in jail after being falsely accused by Potiphar’s wife, he must have felt trapped too. It would have been very easy for him to feel sorry for himself. However, the Bible paints a completely different picture of this young man. Instead of sitting around in self-pity, he searched for ways he could be a blessing in that cell. Joseph became a model prisoner and soon the warden put him in charge of the whole prison.
Maybe you are feeling trapped in a dead-end job, an aging or disabled body, or a stressful relationship. Whatever trap we find ourselves in, it is easy to allow our situations to rob our joy and miss what God wants to do through them. When we believe God is in control, we can look for opportunities to serve him and help others. Joseph was open to what God could do through his imprisonment and was blessed. When life traps us, may we follow his example and watch what God can do.
Open my eyes, Lord, to see what you can do even when I feel life is going nowhere. Amen.
