READ : Proverbs 3:5-6
When I arrived in Kwangju fresh out of language school I was asked to drive a Korean pastor to the penitentiary for a Sunday service. His first words to me were, “What are you preaching on today?” I assured him that I wasn’t the preacher, just his driver for the day.
After passing through numerous iron doors we entered a large room with about 800 mean-looking convicts sitting on the floor. Needless to say, I was rather uncomfortable sitting there while the pastor led the hymns and a prayer. But I wasn’t prepared for what he said next: “Now our new missionary will read the scripture and preach the sermon.” I dutifully stood up and read John 3:16. I said a few words about having freedom by living in God’s will, recited the Lord’s prayer and sat down. Wow, what a baptism under fire!
Often we are overwhelmed by problems and tasks facing us and just have to muddle through. But each morning we can ask the Lord to help us do our best and then depend on him to help us get through another day. Gradually we find our strength and confidence growing and the tough things start becoming easier to face and overcome.
Thank you, God, for being with me. Help me do my best in all the tough things I have to face today. Amen.
