READ : Jeremiah 31:12-13
When no one would even touch a “leper,” missionaries founded a large leprosy colony and rehabilitation hospital on the coast of South Korea.
Now, at a farewell worship for the hospital director the colony harmonica band was playing a lively hymn. Scarred faces, sightless eyes, missing fingers and toes-it made no difference at all as they made beautiful music, praising the Lord and expressing thanks to the doctor and his family who had given them such loving care.
How could these outcasts of society, who were so accustomed to discrimination and abuse, show such joy? What could have turned their mourning into gladness? They had realized that God loved them and accepted them just as they were. He promised to be with them in every dark and difficult experience they had to face.
Have you experienced sadness and mourning? How did you get through it? Chapter 31 of Jeremiah is filled with God’s promises of good things for his people when they were in despair. Read the whole chapter and see if your sorrow doesn’t turn to joy. May your mourning turn to gladness!
Thank you, Lord, for your power that can change despair into singing. May each one who needs that joy find it in your promises today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
