What is That in Your Hand?

Dick Nieusma, Jr.

READ : Exodus 4:1-5

While visiting our home in Korea a group of dentists’ wives asked my wife Ruth if there was something they could do together while looking after their children. Ruth happened to have some knitting needles in her hand and thought of God’s question to Moses, “What is that in your hand?” So she offered to start a knitting club. For a number of years Ruth shared our home and enjoyed fellowship with many Korean ladies because of that knitting club.

God asked Moses that question when he feared that Pharaoh would not believe him or listen to him: “What is that in your hand?” All Moses had was a simple shepherd’s rod. But God used Moses’ rod to accomplish his purpose.

What do you have in your hand? Perhaps you, like Moses, feel that you have nothing with which you can serve God. But think about what your neighbors need. Maybe you can help them with whatever is in your hand. Maybe that is exactly what they need.

Dear Lord, help us to be more aware of our neighbors’ needs. Help us to use all we have to be a blessing to them. Amen.
