Do not put out the Spirit's fire.

Paul Hostetter

READ : 1 Thessalonians 5:19
Ephesians 4:30-32

Putting out a fire produces smoke. Smoke pollutes the atmosphere, burns our eyes and can disable us very quickly. But fire produces heat, light and energy. So why would we ever think of extinguishing the Spirit? The Spirit of God purifies and empowers. John came preaching a baptism of repentance. He showed people the “smoke and mirrors” in their lives and poured water over them as a symbol of their cleansing. But John said of Jesus, “He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.” What does that mean?

On the Day of Pentecost the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples in “what seemed to be tongues of fire” (Acts 2:3, niv). The followers of Jesus shocked the crowd by speaking in different languages. People gathered in Jerusalem for the holy festival were amazed when they heard languages from all around the Roman Empire! Peter’s message that day was instrumental in adding 3,000 believers to the young church. And they all were baptized! Have you ever seen “fire” like that?

Why would we ever do anything to grieve or snuff out the movement of God in our lives? Don’t do it. It is dangerous. It only produces smoke. Honor and obey God’s Spirt and let his fire burn in your heart.

Lord, warm my chilly heart. Energize my lagging spirit. Wipe out every inclination to offend your Holy Spirit.
