Making Jesus Come Alive in Us

READ : John 16:12-15

“He will glorify me. He will take what is mine and make it known to you.” These words of Jesus make a most direct, clear and simple statement about the work of the third person of the Trinity in the Bible.

Before the gifts, before the fruits, before the comfort, before everything else the Holy Spirit makes Jesus come alive in us. The Spirit “makes known” the saving work of Jesus at the Cross. If he didn’t, the preaching of the Cross would be nothing more than foolishness, or a stumbling block. As John Calvin so crisply put it, “We receive the Spirit so that we can enjoy Christ’s benefits.”

First, the “law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus sets us free from the law of sin and death” (Romans 8:2, rsv). This is justification. We are restored to a right relationship with God.

Second, we live our Christian lives according to the Spirit, setting our minds on the things of the Spirit (Romans 8:4). This is sanctification. We grow in holiness.

Third, the Spirit will enable us to do greater works than Jesus did (John 14:12). This is power to act in love.

The Spirit does all these things because he desires to glorify Jesus in us.

“More about Jesus let me learn, More of his holy will discern,

Spirit of God my Teacher be, Showing the things of Christ to me.”

(Eliza E. Hewitt, 1851-1920)
