The Fruit of the Spirit

Joseph Holbrook, Jr.

READ : Galatians 5:16-25

Back in 1949 and 1950 I traveled by bicycle through Europe and by ship and plane to the Middle East. As I passed from areas where the gospel was being preached into areas where the good news of Jesus had barely penetrated, the contrast in the way people lived was striking. I was witnessing what the Apostle Paul tells the Galatians, that the inner presence of the Holy Spirit makes beautiful the outward way that we live.

Where the Spirit has filled the people of a certain country with love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control the ports of entry are clogged with immigrants trying to get in. And where a congregation is filled with people like this, visitors are in the pews each Sunday to experience being surrounded by these fruits.

At our doorstep we have people who are attracted by the change they see the Holy Spirit making in our lives. It is our responsibility to point them to Jesus, the One who set us free from the power of Satan and who sent the Holy Spirit into our lives to produce the fruit that is so attractive.

PRAYER

Spirit of the living God, keep my life filled with love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. I want to attract others to Jesus. In his name. Amen.
