READ : Romans 5:1-5
Romans 5 was championed by the Protestant Reformation because it is a great doctrinal text that emphasizes “justification by faith.” But the Apostle Paul also emphasizes the role of the Holy Spirit, who fills people with God’s love. How sad and ironic that many Reformed Christians do not look like people who have had love poured into them by the Holy Spirit.
The truth is that you and I might affirm all the doctrines of the Reformation creeds and confessions yet still be crabby, self-centered people. The Holy Spirit does something more than open our eyes to the intellectual truth of the gospel. He transforms us into loving people.
The Spirit pushes us to express our beliefs in acts of love. We need to listen, encourage and help our children and young people. We need to embrace, forgive and pray for our fellow Christians. We need to reach out beyond our own kind of people and embrace the whole world with our love, just like God does. Only the Holy Spirit can make that happen. Has he been poured into your heart? Ask him to fill you up!
Lord, thank you for the gift of the Holy Spirit. I want your love poured into my heart and then flowing out to my family, my church, and to the whole world. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
