The Spirit of Our Mission

Joseph Holbrook, Jr.

READ : John 20:19-23

Isn’t it interesting that the first thing the risen Jesus says to his disciples is that he is sending them out into the world just like the Father had sent him into the world? If you had been there and you had an inkling that the next thing that was going to happen was that he was going to breathe on you and say, “Receive the Holy Spirit,” would you have been heading for the door?

When the wind, the breath of the Holy Spirit, comes upon us there is more than our being born again. The purpose of our lives is more than holding down a job, getting a raise, and being successful in our business or profession. Being a Christian, by definition, means being a participant in Christ’s mission. God won’t let us get away with attending church just to hear something to make us feel better.

When I enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1944 it wasn’t to enjoy a soft life. I was trained to take my place alongside others who shared the same mission-victory over the enemies of our country.

What mission is the Holy Spirit breathing into your life today?

Lord, forgive me for ducking, dodging, weaving and hoping to be carried to heaven on flowery beds of ease. Empower my church and me to get out there with the healing power of the gospel where people are hurting. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
