The Spirit Creates the Church

Joseph Holbrook, Jr.

READ : 2 Corinthians 3:1-3

We looked yesterday as Jesus breathed the Holy Spirit on his disciples and sent them out on the mission of announcing the good news of God’s rule to the world.

In our passage today we learn from the Apostle Paul the “how” of fulfilling his mission. Paul refers to the church of Corinth as a “letter of recommendation . . . to be known and read by all men . . . written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God” (vv. 2,3, rsv).

But there was trouble among the Corinthians. Some of them cared for no one but themselves. Some were even splitting the church. They were supposed to be recommendation letters from Christ to the world but they were repelling that world by their behavior rather than attracting it.

Since the Holy Spirit has awakened new life in you he has also awakened the impulse to come together with other born-again people to worship and serve God. The purpose of the church is to demonstrate genuine love so the world will see and believe its message that Christ is Lord. How is your love? Are you giving Christ a good recommendation?

Help us in our congregation, Lord, to let the Holy Spirit write the gospel on the hearts of all of us so that people can “read” us and understand the beauty of Jesus. In his name. Amen.
