READ : Romans 8:1-8
The Old Testament people of God were set free from the power of Pharaoh. Not long after the Exodus through the Red Sea they were given the Law at Mount Sinai. The Apostle Paul is telling us in today’s passage that we New Testament believers go through a similar process. It is certainly a thrilling truth that Jesus, empowered by the Spirit, conquered Satan and set us free from sin. And we, too, are given a law. Not a law with commands carved on stone but “the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus.”
It seems odd that Paul should use the term “law” to speak of the Spirit. The Spirit is a law in that he offers us a new way of life. The Holy Spirit does more than open our blind eyes and breathe new life into our dead souls. He walks with us day by day empowering us to walk the Jesus walk.
When we sense the Spirit saying “no,” we don’t do what we were planning. When we sense the Spirit saying “yes,” we do it with all our heart. “To set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace” (v. 6b).
Thank you, Spirit of God, for not leaving us to be a “law” unto ourselves. Give us the power to live Jesus’ way. In Jesus’ name.
