Paul's Kind of Preaching

Joseph Holbrook, Jr.

READ : 1 Corinthians 2:1-5

Blessed is that congregation that has a preacher who has learned from Paul. “My speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God” (v. 4, rsv).

What if every pastor search team put as its top priority a person who sensed the Holy Spirit speaking the Word through him or her? What if every classis trouble- shooting team made certain that the parties to a dispute were motivated by the high spiritual goals of the Holy Spirit?

There is no reason in the world that our churches cannot be filled with the power of the Holy Spirit in their preaching, teaching, mission and ministry. If the Holy Spirit could pick up Philip after his baptizing the Ethiopian eunuch as recorded in Acts 8 and deposit him miles away he certainly has the power to work through our missionaries, professors, administrators, preachers, and lay people. Let our faith rest not in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.

Give us Spirit-filled men and women in our pulpits, O Lord. And give us Spirit-filled men and women in our pews so that the power of our church may derive not from us, but from you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
