READ : 2 Timothy 1:3-7

A family about to leave on their first year of a mission to China stood in front of our congregation one Sunday morning. They told of the work they would soon be doing. Someone had expressed concern for the safety of their children in a foreign land, but the father of the family told us the only place he felt safe was in the center of God’s will. He knew that trouble comes to us no matter where we are. If we are listening to God and being obedient, nothing will happen that God has not appointed. He truly believed the words of 1 John 4:4, “the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.”

So often we refuse to listen to what God is saying to us because it sounds ridiculous or dangerous. Instead we listen to what the world says is sensible and “out of harm’s way.” We fail to recall that God has often called his people to do what seemed ridiculous to those around them. Noah was thought a fool for building the ark. Joshua’s trumpet blowers looked silly marching around Jericho’s wall. People still say the cross is foolish!
