Listen Before You Speak

Have you ever received a pearl of wisdom-a little bit of advice you could never forget? Perhaps it came from a parent or a mentor. No matter the person, the advice became a part of you.

My insight came to me from my father in a little “throw away line” that I picked up and have never forgotten. This little pearl of wisdom I have carried in my heart: “Listen before you speak.”

How many times do we open our mouths before giving our fellow person a chance to speak their mind? I know I am guilty of cutting in while someone else is speaking. I feel the importance and weight of what needs to be said, so I speak up only to find out later it was not all that important. I have put my foot in my mouth more times than I can count. Conversely, the times I have been patient enough to listen were the most rewarding. If one listens one will gain morsels of wisdom while others talk.

God tells us to seek knowledge not only by thinking but also through attentive, discriminating listening.

Merciful God, open our ears that we may hear. Open our eyes that we may see; open our hearts that we may understand today and every day.
