A Substitute for God?

READ : Deuteronomy 8:10-20

Amazing! People worship gods who do not exist. The Israelites were introduced to the true and living God 4,000 years ago. They learned that he was the creator of our planet and the human race. They discovered his personality and character. This God revealed himself to the Israelites when he freed them from the slave pits of Egypt and protected them in their desert wanderings. However, when Moses their leader left for an audience with God, the Israelites talked Moses’ brother into crafting an idol. They danced around it as if this man-made god had ears and hands to help them.

People still worship false gods. Their gods are birthed in their imaginations. God is thought to be a harmless grandfather, an absentee landlord, or a policeman. Sometimes he is simply called “tolerance.”

A god of our imagination is obviously powerless. Such a god makes little difference to anyone. No wonder so many live as if there is no God. Since people are not satisfied to live totally without gods, they create substitutes for him. Money, careers, education and even family are worshiped. Many people experience the sting of this mischief. Lives apart from the true God end in tragedy. A substitute god will never do.

True and Eternal God, help me to know who you really are. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
