READ : John 15:9-17
Today is Independence Day in the United States, set aside to remember people who gave their lives for freedom. Jesus said, “Greater love has no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.” Jesus lived for his friends and for others every day, even though he knew that doing so would eventually lead to his death. At the end he prayed, “Not my will but yours be done” and laid down his life for us.
As we all know, astonishing stories of unselfish heroism came out of every revolution and war in the last century. What is even more astonishing are those who live every day for the benefit of others. They choose to give their lives for their beliefs and for the sake of Christ and the gospel, not just once but over and over again.
In all walks of life, there are people among us who are giving their time, devoting and sacrificing their lives for loved ones, for country and for humanity. They are the people we remember and venerate for their selflessness. And their example leads us to ask, “Lord, how will people remember me?”

Lord, take my selfishness away. I can’t cure it by myself.
