READ : Isaiah 50:10-11
As I write this, a shocking day of infamy is unfolding on the TV screen. This is the day that the World Trade Center was destroyed and thousands of lives were snuffed out. The Pentagon, America’s military nerve center, was also hit. We demand to know-who did this?! Our President demands to know!
I don’t know what those demands will produce. I do know that all of us have faced crises in our lives when we demanded to know from God, “What’s going on here? Where is your hand in all this?”
Does God owe us an answer? Not really. Maybe he knows things we aren’t able to understand. He has a much broader picture of all that’s going on and how things must work out to accomplish his perfect purposes.
When we kindle our little fires of limited understanding, and walk in the light of our own genius, we will end up in torment. Our knowledge is never enough. We must fear God (Prov. 1:7) and obey him (Jn. 14:21) because he loves us! When we know his love, then we will walk in his light (Ps. 119:105). As we see more and more of his love expressed for us in his Word, we will learn to trust his heart-even when we can’t see his hand.
There is much in this world I don’t understand, O Lord. Teach me to trust. There is no viable alternative.
