"What to Do?"

Larry McAuley

READ : Proverbs 3:5-8

When we lived in Ethiopia, this was a favorite expression. We ran up against new situations all the time that we didn’t know how to handle. What to do? We were confronted by countless Ethiopian high school students saying, “I have no school fees for next term.” What to do? Or, “Our goats ate my home work.” What to do?

When we come up against those questions in life, we respond, “What to do?” We make decisions based on the news, the stock market, the advice of our family and friends. We make decisions based on many factors. Sometimes we make good decisions. Often we don’t!

There is a principle in Proverbs 3 that will help us to determine what to do. The principle is: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart.” We are not to rely on our own understanding of events. We see too little of the big picture.

In every decision, at every cross-roads in life, if we acknowledge God as Lord of our lives, he will make our path straight. It may not be an easy path, but it will be straight. Complete trust leads to right action. I have found it to be true.

Lord God, so often I just don’t know what to do. Help me to trust you to lead me.
