What To Do With The Devil

Paul Hostetter

READ : 1 Peter 5:8-11

The Devil is poised to pounce, and would like nothing better than to catch you napping. (The Message)

The Message translator personalizes our spiritual enemy by capitalizing his name-Devil. In the Bible he is called trouble-maker, adversary, deceiver, prince of unseen and awesome powers. Contemporary culture in the USA often treats the Devil as a mythological, frivolous joke. Numerous movies seem to portray the Devil as a destructive, devouring, confusing, strike-‘em-dead, personal force.

I think all people know in their honest, private moments that there is a power prompting them to evil. We all know the perplexing problem. So what do you do to combat a subversive Devil, intent on undermining the good in your life? Peter turns out more straight-forward counsel for us:

  • Keep a cool head. Control yourself.
  • Be alert. Don’t be duped by this Guy!
  • Resist him stubbornly. Keep your guard up.
  • Keep a firm grip on faith just as others do.

These reflections are published to nourish and encourage a vital, Devil-defeating faith. We must keep our defenses up. The Lion of Evil is a prowling menace.

Lord Jesus, you are Lord and the Devil is not. Keep my resistance to his wiles on maximum alert. Amen.
