Christ's Fragrance in the Earth

Joyce Magee

READ : 2 Corinthians 2:14-16

We are to God the aroma of Christ. (v. 15 niv)

Having lived for nearly forty years on the Pacific coast in northern Japan, we sense the seasonal changes by the smell of the ocean, which is not far from our house. The raw salty winds of winter and early spring winds smell different from the balmy breezes of mid-summer. Warm winds in late summer and fall are laden with the smells of fish and seaweed. Fragrances in our garden also tell us what season it is by whatever flowers are blooming. The fragrances of lilacs and lily of the valley unmistakably announce that spring is here.

Fragrance often carries a stronger message than words can. Reflect for a moment on the lives of people you have known. You probably remember some folks whose lives carried the distinctive aroma of Christ’s presence, which comes from knowing him and sharing his beauty with others. The fragrance of Jesus brings peace and blessing to many who encounter him in us. We are a reminder both of God’s love and God’s justice among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing.

Loving God, help me to share the aroma of your loving presence with those I meet today.
