Living Confidently

READ : 2 Corinthians 3:12-16

Since we have such a hope, we are very bold. (v. 12 niv)

In recent years we have seen the economies of this world weaken and the confidence of many people be totally shaken. Threats of terrorism and war have crushed many people’s dreams for the future. In Japan, where we live, there has been an increase in suicides among middle-aged males. Many of them had their hopes pinned on the companies they worked for and the banks where their money was stored. Other people’s hopes have collapsed with the fall of the stock market.

Paul says to the Corinthians that our hope is based on Jesus Christ, who has given us new life and who cannot fail. God is not swayed by the events of history. How hard we’ve worked or how high we’ve climbed the ladder of success does not determine our worth in God’s eyes. Remember, it was while we were still sinners that Christ died for us. Thus God loved the world as it was, by sending Jesus to provide the way for our salvation, which is our hope for this world and the next. We walk in confidence in the face of difficulties because our strength is in Jesus Christ.

O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home.
