Living in the Light of God

Steven Laman

READ : Psalm 139:1-12

Even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you. (v. 12 niv)

Making our way back to the hotel, my family strolled down Broadway in New York City’s famous Times Square at ten o’clock at night. Even at that hour, the brilliance from the thousands of multicolored bulbs and electronic billboards illuminated the night sky so much that it seemed as bright as day.

Having just read Psalm 139, I could imagine that this is something like what night is like for God. We cannot hide from him, even in the cover of night, because darkness is like daylight to him. At first, the concept of having an all- seeing God watching over us constantly seems a little unsettling. We don’t let even our closest family and friends know everything about us, for fear they might discover an awful secret and reject us. Gratefully we do not have to worry about that with God. He already knows everything about us and yet he still loves us. With that knowledge, we are free to rejoice with the psalmist that God continually has his loving, guiding, protecting eyes on us.
