Part of the Family

READ : Romans 8:12-25

God’s Spirit touches our spirits and confirms who we really are. We know who he is, and we know who we are: Father and children. (v. 16 Message)

“Can I see everyone’s ID please?” the ticket agent asked, as she prepared our boarding passes. My mom and dad dug out their driver’s licenses. “I’m sorry we forgot his,” Mom apologized as she glanced at me, “but I can assure you that he’s our son.” Fortunately this happened before the FAA tightened security, and the agent could give me my boarding pass without checking my ID.

Once we accept Christ, the Holy Spirit confirms that we are God’s adopted sons and daughters. Being God’s heirs brings with it some remarkable family privileges: forgiveness, salvation, and eternal life. If that isn’t enough, there are also the advantages of being led by the Holy Spirit and being able to talk with God any time day or night. No earthly parent is perfect, but thankfully our heavenly Father is completely fair, loving, and trustworthy.

Hearing Mom say, “He’s our son,” felt wonderful. No matter how you feel about your physical family, it is a comfort to realize that God identifies us as part of his family. Do you know him as your loving heavenly Father?

Thank you, Father, for calling me your child. Help me to deepen that relationship.
