Return to me, for I have redeemed you. (Isa. 44:22b niv)
Today, the day after Christmas, malls and stores are once again packed, not only for the sales, but for returning that not-so-perfect gift. However, some stores are tightening up on their return policy, making it harder to take merchandise back. It can be a real hassle-making sure you have the gift receipt, checking if all the tags are still on, waiting in a long line, and all the while wondering if they will actually take it back.
God has a return policy, too. Thankfully, his has no strings attached. He is always willing to take lost and broken people back. In Jesus’ famous parable, the prodigal son left his father’s house and made a mess of life. Hopeful that his dad would welcome him home, he headed down that familiar road. He didn’t wonder long because his father was watching for him. As soon as he was in sight, his father ran to him to accept him.
This is how our heavenly Father treats us when we turn away from our sins and back towards his face. He always welcomes us with open arms. And that is the best return policy of all.
Thank you, Father, that when I repent you will take me back.
