READ : Galatians 5:1-15
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. (v. 1 NIV)
Harry Houdini, the famous escape artist, claimed that if he were locked up in any jail in the country, he could set himself free in a matter of minutes. He never failed to make good his boast until one day when something went wrong. He simply could not budge the lock. He worked on it for two hours and got nowhere. Finally, in exhaustion, Houdini collapsed against the cell door, whereupon it swung open. It had never been locked!
Life can often be like that. Like Houdini, we put ourselves in a “jail” that we work desperately and feverishly to escape. But the door of God’s grace was open all the time!
God doesn’t want us to feel locked up and in bondage. He wants us to be free! So Paul says, “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free” (v. 1). Christianity is not a religion of rules and rituals to be obeyed. As the apostle states it so well, “The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love” (v. 6). Through faith in Jesus Christ alone we are set free to “serve one another in love” (v. 13).
Heavenly Father, thank you for setting us free. Help us to use our freedom to serve one another. Amen.
