Recalibrating the Compass We Live By

Tim Brown

READ : Matthew 17:1-13

This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him! (v. 5)

The transfiguration of Jesus ought to recalibrate our spiritual compasses. The voice of God speaks from the cloud, “This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him.” Those words are actually a quote from Psalm 2. The living God quotes the Book of God! And we fail to listen to it at our own peril! I love these words of John Wesley: “I want to know one thing: the way to heaven. God has condescended to show me the way. He has written it in a book! O give me that book! At any price give me the book of God! I have it and I have life itself!”

Bible reading today is at a dismal ebb tide and the shoreline of our spirituality reveals an embarrassment of clutter. But we can change that here and now. When I was a little boy I learned in Sunday school this simple song, “The B-I-B-L-E, yes that’s the Book for me!” Do you remember singing that song? Are you willing to sing it again? Even better can you live your way into its simple vision?

PRAYER

Father, may your Word be our rule, your Spirit our Teacher, and the glory of Jesus our single concern. Amen.
