READ : Matthew 24:36-44
Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour. (v. 44)
The Son of Man is coming. The risen Christ is not glued to his seat at the right hand of God. As we say in the Apostles’ Creed: “From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.”
Coming when? “About that day and hour no one knows,” said Jesus. Only this do we know: he is coming! And it will be at a time when we least expect it. Do thieves tell you in advance the day when they plan on breaking into your home and robbing you? No. “Therefore you must also be ready,” said Jesus, “for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour.” So the big question is: Are you ready?
Of all Michelangelo’s frescoes in the Sistine Chapel in Rome, none is more poignant than the man in the last judgment being dragged down into Hades by demons. He has one hand over one eye, and in the other eye there is a look of dire recognition. He understands. But it’s too late now.
It’s not too late for you. Don’t wait until it is too late. The Son of Man is coming, but you can be ready. When you accept Christ as your Savior, you’re ready to meet him, any hour, any day.
Maranatha! Even so, come, Lord Jesus!
