READ : Colossians 3:1-4
So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. (v. 1)
In today’s world where does power reside? For some it is Washington, DC, or Beijing: centers of political power. For others it is New York City or Tokyo: centers of economic power. Or maybe Los Angeles or Rome: centers of culture-shaping power. Where is the power in the world?
Today is Ascension Day. Today we celebrate the ascension of Jesus the resurrected Lord. We confess, in the words of the Apostles’ Creed, that Christ ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. To be seated “at the right hand” is a special place of honor and power. And as Paul reminds us (Philippians 2), this exaltation is because of Christ’s obedience – even death on a cross.
So we Christians should be able to see through the veil of supposed power to where the real power is – the power of the Lamb who now reigns as Lord. And we are to seek the things of Christ – to rule the earth as he rules creation. Christ has risen and ascended and been exalted at God’s right hand. Praise God!
Risen and ascended Lord, take away our blinders and show us the path to true power. Remind us whom we serve.
