READ : Matthew 6:9-13
Your Kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. (v. 10)
Our faith is rich in earth-affirming language and imagery, though many may not realize it. For example, in the doxology we sing “Praise God from whom all blessings flow; / Praise Him all creatures here below.” In the Apostles’ Creed we confess belief in and pledge allegiance to God the “Maker of heaven and earth.” In the Lord’s Prayer we pray that God’s will be done “on earth as it is in heaven.” And Psalm 148, Genesis 1, and Matthew 6 are a few of the biblical texts that direct our attention firmly toward the earth.
Our faith is earthy and earthly. God’s will be done on earth, we pray – in our homes, neighborhoods, schools, workplaces. Today, right now, at this time may your will be done. While we long for that day when shalom will be fully realized, we pray and work for shalom to break into this present world. Let it be “On earth as it is in heaven.” Christian faith is not really about going to heaven, but about heaven coming to earth. It is about God’s will fully realized – that’s what heaven is – here on earth.
Lord God of heaven and earth, so empower us by your Spirit that we may live the prayer your Son taught us. Help us to bear witness to your will done here on earth.
