Pancake Christians

READ : 1 Corinthians 9:19-23

I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some. (v. 22 NIV)

Are you a pancake Christian? Billy Graham has pointed out that if every disciple of Jesus would win one person to him every year, in 17 years the entire world would be saved. Like pouring syrup over a pancake and spreading it to the edges – the glory of God covering the earth! An inspiring challenge!

Unfortunately the world is more like a waffle than a pancake. As syrup is poured over a waffle it runs into little walls, inhibiting its flow. Similarly, as we spread the gospel, we run into barriers – barriers of language and culture, making it difficult for people to understand or embrace it. Our Good News is perceived as foreign, irrelevant, or even a threat. Even in our North American setting, we experience culture clashes to a degree in “worship wars” – contemporary music versus hymns; country versus rap.

Effectively communicating the message of Jesus to people means separating the biblical message from our cultural trappings and allowing people to consider the claims of Jesus within the context of their own culture. God is looking for people from every people group on earth to worship at his throne, in a mosaic of cultural expression!

Help me grasp the essentials of the Good News of Jesus, and share them effectively.
