The Water of Life

Steve Macchia

READ : John 7:25-44

If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him. (vv. 37-38 NIV)

Stationed along marathon routes are people handing cups of water to runners in need of sustenance for the miles ahead. Those on the sidelines are literally “pouring courage” into the hearts and bodies of those pounding along their lengthy route. If it weren’t for the water, the runner would dehydrate, collapse, and fall out of the race.

When we come to Jesus and drink deeply from the water of life he offers, we are replenished for the day ahead. We come to him with a craving thirst, knowing that he will satisfy our soul. He has never disappointed his children by withholding streams of living water.

The water Jesus gives is found in his Word, demonstrated in his love, and confirmed in prayer. He not only gives it to us individually but corporately, within the faith community of the church. We can drink from this spring alone and together, and the refreshment of Christ’s life sustains us for the road ahead.

Don’t try running life’s race without the living water of Christ . . . otherwise you will tire and fall.

Lord, I come with mouth wide open to drink in your love today. Satisfy my thirst like only you can do!
