The Great Consoler

READ : John 14:1-14

Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. (v. 1 NIV)

The night was dark and frightful. As the thunder clapped and the lightning lit up the sky, I held my daughter firmly on my lap. I too was a bit overwhelmed by the drama, but we rocked and sang and whispered words of love. There was comfort and peace within us and as a result, we were not shattered by the noise of the night all around us.

Jesus consoles his disciples as his departure draws near. Thomas and Philip want to know where he is going (John 14:5) and who will show them the way (v. 8). Jesus’ answers bring them back to the simple truths he’s told them all along the way: “Don’t let your hearts be troubled; trust in God; have faith in me.”

When the journey of life becomes dark and difficult, and you seem to have lost your way, you are only a short prayer away from the Great Consoler. Jesus – the way, the truth and the life – invites us to lean on him for strength.

Trust in God’s abiding presence. The noise of the day or the darkness of night will not keep him from coming to you with his love and comfort.

Lord Jesus, I wholeheartedly desire your truth and life . . . please show me the way.
