Family Faith

READ : 2 Timothy 1:3-5

I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that lived first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, lives in you. (v. 5)

Whenever Paul thinks of Timothy, his dear son in the faith, he feels fresh gratitude. He is always praying for him, and longs to see him. Whenever they meet, the apostle is filled with joy.

Part of that joy and thankfulness comes from remembering Timothy’s family. Although the father was a Greek, his mother was a devout Jew. Probably she and her mother, Lois, had come to believe in Christ when Timothy did. But long before that, she had trusted in the God of Israel, and had taught her son from the Old Testament Scriptures.

What a beautiful thing it is when Jewish people, nurtured in the Law, the Prophets, and the Writings, come to welcome Jesus as their true Messiah! And how blessed are the Timothys who grow up in godly homes! The sincere faith of parents and grandparents, along with their love and prayers, creates a blessed environment for children. In that setting believers can claim God’s marvelous promise: “The Lord your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your descendants, so that you will love the Lord your God with all your heart . . . that you may live” (Deut. 30:6).
