READ : Titus 2:11-15
We wait for the blessed hope and the manifestation of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ . . . who gave himself to us . . . (vv. 13-14)
If you’ve ever held a job where you were paid based upon commission, you understand the motivation for doing your job well. After all, your livelihood depends on it! You cannot afford to take too much time off or be apathetic about your work.
Those who believe that Jesus Christ is coming back are motivated by his promised return. For believers, the motivation that comes from anticipating Christ’s return is not a fearful one. Rather, Paul makes it clear in this text that the motivation for living a godly life is that Christ’s return is “our blessed hope.” The fact that Jesus Christ is coming again doesn’t just bring us joy in times of sorrow or suffering; it motivates us to live for him!
What is motivating you today? What is it that drives you to do what you need or should do? Hopefully it’s not fear or pressure. If you are a believer in Jesus Christ, you have a blessed hope that one day he will appear again to the whole world. We don’t need to fear judgment because his return spurs us toward right living.
Father, may we look forward to the return of Christ, and in so doing be motivated by the blessed hope we have in him.
