READ : Deuteronomy 28:15-29

You shall become an object of horror to all the kingdoms of the earth. (v. 25)

Have you ever wondered whether an accident or other unfortunate event was a sign from God? Perhaps you wrecked your car, lost your job, or worse, learned that you were suffering from a serious disease. In such moments it is common to examine our lives, to search for unconfessed sin or some reason for our distress. Is God trying to get my attention? What does he want to teach me?

Israel did not have to guess very long. As Yahweh’s model to the rest of the world, God wanted other nations to observe her blessings and, confessing that Israel’s Lord is the one true God, seek to join her community.

However, the price of Israel’s privilege was the harsh penalties for disobedience. If Israel foolishly abandoned God and his covenant, she would languish in a barren land until her enemies, decidedly unimpressed with her society, demolished her towns, slaughtered her sons and daughters, and led her few miserable survivors into captivity.

We may never know the reason for this or that trial. But like Israel, we can know that those who break covenant with Yahweh eventually pay, and long-term flourishing is for those who humbly obey. The meek really will inherit the earth (Matt. 5:5).

Father, I cannot always see your hand, but I know I can trust your heart.
