READ : Acts 7:54-60
I see the heavens opened . . . (v. 56)
It is not as rare an experience as you might think – to see the heavens opened and to behold the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God. Sometimes life pounds us with heavy stones. Financial problems. Health problems. The loss of a job. The death of a spouse. The blows keep coming, one after another, pounding you to your knees.
But suddenly, something happens to remind you that God is still in control and that you haven’t slipped beyond the Father’s care. You recall a promise in the Bible, perhaps, or the verse of a hymn. Or a friend comes to pray with you. Whatever it is, it fills you with hope. It’s as though you see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God. And like Stephen, you are not afraid anymore.
However life may be pounding you just now, remember that you haven’t fallen out of the Father’s hand, nor has this world spun out of his control. God grant that in our darkest hour the heavens will open, and we will realize anew that Jesus Christ is not a sacred memory but a living Lord, reigning at the right hand of the Father. Armed with that knowledge, we’re ready for anything.
Thank you, Father, for never letting me slip out of your hand.
