READ : 1 Corinthians 1:4-9
God is faithful: by him you were called into the fellowship of
his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. (v. 9)
As a zealous new Christian at the age of 13, I remember praying for a miracle. “God, do something wonderful so I know it’s you!” I was tired of my common life. I wanted the color, drama, and excitement that the early Christians saw. I wanted my drab, ordinary world to be ennobled by a great work of God. So I prayed, “God, do something!” Like many inexperienced new believers, I thought if I could only see a miracle up close in real life, then it would somehow justify my fresh, excitable faith.
God did not answer my prayer. At least not in the way I expected. Over the years since, I began to realize that the goal is not to see a miracle, because in faith I am living a miracle, the miracle of sharing in the life of Christ himself. This is a trustworthy statement: “God is faithful; by him you were called into fellowship with his Son.”
Advent is a season in which we remember we are living a miracle. In Christ, every square inch of our reality is framed in a miracle. This miracle is ours to be experienced right now, by the gift of grace.
God, give us eyes to see our fellowship with Christ as a miracle that ennobles the common.
