READ : Mark 13:24-27
Then they will see ‘the Son of Man coming in clouds’ with great power and glory. (v. 26)
Last Christmas season I was back in the United States after four years of living in a small town in Scotland. Without much money or family nearby, our Christmas preparations in Scotland had focused on our studies and our churches and the Advent season.
Last year I realized, a bit too late, that in coming back to America my Christmas preparations had been almost entirely focused on (a) what presents I was giving to which family members and (b) how to arrange our travel schedule so that we could make sure to see as much of our family as possible.
In my more reflective moments I would contemplate the approaching celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ and the miraculous truth that the One through whom all things were made was himself made man for our sake.
And yet today’s reading reminds me that Advent is about even more than Christ’s birth. As we anticipate Christmas, let us also anticipate the return of Christ in glory, to gather his people unto himself (v. 27) and to usher in the day when there will be no more mourning and crying and pain.
Lord, may your Spirit remind us this Christmas season of your long-anticipated return.
