Patience and Grace

READ : Luke 1:26-38

He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end. (vv. 32-33)

Two days ago we read about a promise that the Lord made to David. When David wanted to build God a house, God turned things around by promising to build David’s house. He did not mean a physical house but the line of David that would continue so one of David’s descendants would be king forever.

In today’s passage, the angel Gabriel is speaking to Mary, telling her that she will conceive a son who she will name Jesus. This son will be the Son of the Most High; his reign will be forever, and his kingdom will never end. Mary’s son Jesus is the fulfillment of the promise that God made to David generations and centuries earlier!

Nine hundred years of waiting separated God’s promise to David and its fulfillment in Jesus. Now 2,000 more years have passed, and still we wait—expectantly—for the Son of the Most High to usher in the full, living reality of God’s kingdom here on earth.

God, grant us the patience to wait for Christ’s return, and give us the grace to acknowledge him when he comes after generations and centuries.
