A Love Song for All Seasons

Tim Brown

READ : Song of Solomon 1:1-7

For your love is better than wine … (v. 2)

As the day dawns on a brand new year, teeming with hope, join me in adding to your list of New Year’s resolutions a resolve to fall in love with God all over again.

For your love is better than wine … One of the first decisions we need to make in reading the Song of Solomon is to settle in our minds whose love is being considered. Is this love song about the passion of a man and woman or the love that courses between heaven and earth? The answer is yes! Based on St. Paul’s “double vision” in Ephesians 5, where he sees the relationship between husbands and wives and Christ and the church so tightly interwoven that even an eagle’s eye could not separate them, I begin with the assumption that the Song of Solomon must be read both literally and allegorically.

For your love is better than wine … This is the testimony of a person who knows the deep, deep love of the Lord, a love that sent the Son of God into the world and onto the cross to do for us what we could never do for ourselves.

Living God, your love is better than wine, and we desire to drink the cup of your salvation dry. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
