How Fair and Pleasant You Are!

How fair and pleasant you are, O loved one … (v. 6)

Seen through a gospel-lens these verses show us the love of Christ for the church. How fair and pleasant you are, O loved one … And I pray that all those who belong to Christ, but have long since forgotten how he loves them, might guzzle these words with outstretched ears.

A 15-year-old girl takes one look in the bathroom mirror before she leaves for school and convinces herself again that she is not cool enough, or popular enough, and certainly not skinny enough … I want her to hear the Beloved say, How fair and pleasant you are, O loved one …

A 41-year-old mother watches her last child turn his tassel toward an exciting tomorrow with a lump in her throat and a tear in her eye as she shrinks in his rear view mirror … I want her to hear the Beloved say, How fair and pleasant you are, O loved one

An 89-year-old man sitting in a local nursing home daily fingers the obituaries and wonders why he can’t finally be called home. I want him to hear the Beloved say, How fair and pleasant you are, O loved one

PRAYER

Give us ears to hear, O God, what the Beloved thinks of those whom he loves. Amen.
