READ : 2 Corinthians 1:3-11
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who consoles us in all our affliction. (vv. 3-4)
Dave and Jan Dravecky were first thrust into the public spotlight in the late 1980s when Dave’s career took off as a major league baseball pitcher, a “southpaw” for the San Francisco Giants. Shortly after realizing his lifelong dream, Dave was diagnosed with soft tissue cancer in the deltoid muscle of his pitching arm. The next years were a whirlwind of surgery, radiation, pain, and depression, all in the glaring light of the media. Eventually, Dave’s arm was amputated to stop the spread of the cancer and save his life.
Through it all, Dave and Jan’s faith in God and the comfort God gave them through others provided the anchor they needed in the midst of their storm. In 1991 Dave and Jan founded Outreach of Hope in response to the thousands of letters and requests they received from hurting people encouraged by their many books and public appearances.
Dave and Jan became intimately aware of their own frailty as they experienced the kind of affliction Paul describes in 2 Corinthians 1. They could have stalled in self-pity, but they chose to reach out by faith instead. They consoled others with the comfort and hope they themselves received in their time of need.
Help us know your comfort and extend it to others.
